Both IPL and BBL are good at their places, but IPL is considered more popular and entertaining compared to BBL. Here we have drafted the difference between both leagues for better understanding.

Difference Between IPL vs BBL

Origin of T20 leagues

IPL: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) founded the Indian Premier League in 2007. It is a professional T20 cricket league. The league started with 8 franchise teams that are based in 8 different cities in India. Generally, the Indian T20 league is hosted in March and May every year. This year with the 15th edition of IPL 2022, there are 10 teams in the T20 league with 2 new teams named Lucknow SuperGiants and Gujarat Titans.

BBL: The Big Bash League is also known by the name KFC Big Bash League. It is a T20 Cricket league hosted every year in Australia. Cricket Australia founded this franchise-based league in the year 2011 IPL BBL also has 8 franchise teams based in 8 different cities. BBL is played in December, January, and February in Australia.

League Format

IPL: Indian Premier Features 10 teams from Indian Indian cities including Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Kolkata, Mohali, Jaipur, Lucknow, Gujarat, and Chennai. This year in IPL 2022, the league is divided into two groups - Group A and Group A to host the league smoothly. The teams are divided into two groups based on the titles won the maximum number of times. Mumbai Indians won the IPL title 5 times and will be leading Group A, whereas Chennai SuperKings will be leading GroupB (no of titles won 4 times).

Each team will be playing two matches with their group teams, which makes it a total of eight matches for each team. For the remaining 6 matches, they will be playing against the 5 teams in the other group. This will make a total of 14 matches (8+6).

With a total of 74 matches, the IPL 2022 will be hosted for 65 days along with 8 old and 2 new teams. The formation of 2 new franchises clearly states the popularity of IPL and how it is expanding over time.

BBL: All the teams play 2 matches against each other during the league making a total of 56 matches before heading towards the finals. There are 40 group stage matches and every team plays 10 matches before the semi-finals. The final match is played on the home ground of the highest-ranked team.

Team Composition

IPL: The team must have 18 to 25 players in a team with 8 maximum overseas players. In a PlayingXI a team is allowed to have only 4 overseas players. A team can have only a maximum of two uncapped players. A team must spend Rs 67.5 crores from the total to pursue the value of Rs.90 crores to buy the players.

BBL: In the BBL, each franchise can have 19 contracted players in a team. The team must include 6 overseas players and 2 rookie players. For a particular match, only 3 overseas players are allowed to play in the playing xi. If an original overseas player is not able to play the game, then a maximum of two overseas cricketers can replace those players.

Prize Money

IPL: The IPL 2022 Prize Money for the winners will be INR 20 crore, and runners-up will be INR 13 crore. The team that loses in Qualifier 2 match will receive prize money of INR 7 crore, while the team that loses the Eliminator will receive prize money of INR 6.5 crore.

Last year in IPL 2021, the prize money for winners was 20 crore, for runners-up 12.5 crores, for third and fourth position winners 8.75 and 8.75 respectively.

BBL: For the BBL 2020/21 winner received 2.45 crore. The runner-up received AUD 260,000 and each losing semi-finalist won AUD 80,000 and the team who finished in the fifth position received AUD 20,000.

Demand and Popularity

IPL: When we talk about the strength of the franchises of IPL and BBL, IPL has some strong franchises and the game is real. In the past 5 years, three different teams have won the IPL title, which sums up the fair competition among talented teams and players.

The game gives a fairly equal chance to all the players to showcase their talent and win the IPL title.

BBL: In BBL the 5 tournaments are won by 4 different franchises which shows the competitiveness of the T20 league. From the beginning till the winner's announcement, the competition is too high in the game.
