Rare Facts about the Cricket fielding for Fantasy Cricket Users

Have you come across dialogues like “Edged and taken at first slip”? Do you know the meaning of all technical terms of Cricket? There are many less-known facts and rules about cricket that we don’t know, which eventually affects our team formation on Royal11. Before even entering the game of Fantasy Cricket, you must know the technical terminology and meaning of the game which is used generally on the field. Generally, batting and bowling-related terminology are known by all, but how about fielding. Fielding is equally important to win a match on the field.

Rare Fielder Position in Cricket:

To make your game easier on the Royal11, we have listed all the fielding-related technical terms and positions. Consider the below fielder positions and who are professional at respective positions to boost your winning chances in Fantasy cricket.

  1. Slips

Slips are placed when a batsman slips or makes a mistake. Generally, a player stands to the right hand of the wicketkeeper to catch the edged ball which is out of the wicket-keeper league. There are different types of slip like leg slip or fly slip (generally stands at the edge of a 30-yard circle). A batsman should be very careful while playing.

  1. Gully -

It is a somewhat similar position to a slip. A gully is generally to fill the gap between slips and points. This position makes a square from the batsman position, that's why it is called Gully. It is both a catch-and-run-saving position. Less seen in the limited over cricket, hence almost a muse fielding position in Test Cricket.

  1. Mid-off and Mid-on -

Both are the midway positions to the bowler’s left and right from the fence. The terms are made from ‘middle wicket off’ and ‘middle wicket on’, which is the meaning of both terms in the early days. The area is quite sensitive, especially in the long format of fantasy cricket.

  1. Point -

Point position made by the greatest fielder of all time, Jonty Rhodes, and also known as ‘Jonty’s Corner’. Usually, teams place their best fielder in this position, where running out chances of a batsman is high. It is an attacking and catching site.

  1. Cow Corner -

It’s the position between wide long-on and deep midwicket. No one knows how the name is derived, but a popular notion suggests not many shots can be played at this position, so cows can easily graze here! Funny, indeed!

  1. Long Stop and Straight Hit -

You must have heard about no ball while playing cricket in a gully or even on Royal11 because your team’s fielders might be standing straight in line with the stumps. It is a fielding spot, which is aligned straight behind in line with the wicketkeeper. A straight hit to the other hand behind the bowler standing between long-on and long-off.

  1. Square leg -

It's the position where the fielder stands 90 degrees to the pitch on the leg side. The square leg position is close to the leg umpire. There are other variations in the positions like a deep backward square where a fielder stands back on the boundary, and when a fielder stands close to the batter on the leg side called short leg.

  1. Third Man -

In the early days, there was a gap between the slip and gully position from where the ball used to sneak out and give the additional runs to the batting team. Then the captains decided to put a player in that position (third slip and gully)for fielding, which resulted in the name third man. It is a defensive position and stops the run flow.

  1. Sweeper Cover-

Sweeper cover or deep cover is a defensive position intended to prevent the four scored by a player. Here the fielder needs to cover the large area on either side to save the ball from going to the boundaries.

  1. Long Leg -

Under this position, the fielder is facing the batsmen at about a 60-degree angle position. The fielder needs to cover up the gap between the square leg and the deep fine leg.

Conclusion

Have you ever thought from the fielding point of view while creating a PlayingXI in Fantasy Cricket? It is a common mistake made by fantasy cricket users, ignoring the fielders' importance in the game. Here we have listed down the fielding position which directly affects the batsmen's performance. Consider the following position and choose the batsmen, bowlers, and fielders accordingly.
